Design Comments and Construction

Approximately 25 years ago a group of professional fishing guides from Key West, FL were brought together by a Massachusetts sailboat builder... Edey & Duff, to design the ultimate offshore fishing boat with naval architect Ray Hunt. Their objective was to design a mid-sized center console fishing boat that performed well in all sea conditions. It had to be stable at anchor and drift, able to run in relatively shallow water and heavy offshore conditions. The cockpit needed to be clean yet functional with ample live well and fish box capabilities.

The Conch construction methods are what separates them from other boat manufactures of this era. The hulls are born with only the finest materials; biaxial fabrics, vinylester resins, Corecell foam and high-density foam transom- 100% composite- no wood. All hulls are vacuum infused resulting in stronger and lighter parts. The stringers are full height 3-4" diameter foam encapsulated then fully laminated to the hull on its bottom and sides. Transverse bulkheads are hand laminated to the stringers, hull bottom, and hull sides creating a rigid grid and structure. Custom aluminum fuel tanks are fitted to compartments, bolted to the stringers and bulkheads, foamed in, then fully fiberglassed on top to prevent water intrusion. Decks are 1" foam composite bonded to stringers and bulkheads with methacrylate adhesive, then fiberglasses-laminated to all stringers and bulkheads below deck. Foam composite gunnels are bonded to the hull with adhesive, thru-bolted, and then fiberglassed to support gussets and bulkheads. The console is bonded to the deck with adhesive, thru-bolted and fiberglassed on the inside to the deck and stringers. S/s hardware is installed with thru-bolts. A large rubber rub rail runs the full area of the boat.
